Catch Fleeting Moments

Watercolor painting has changed the way I see. I find myself noticing the sunlight touching the tip of my daughter’s nose or the distorted reflections of an underwater swimmer. In order to catch these often fleeting details, I rely on my camera. Photographs can capture the busy activities of children, one of my favorite subjects. I generally take multiple candid shots from various viewpoints. Once developed, I place the photos in a small album and look them over whenever I have a few moments. The ones I keep going back to are the ones I ultimately select to paint. Often, I use several reference photos to design a final composition. Black-and-white copies can help define values, and I frequently refer to these during the actual painting process. Once I render a detailed drawing, I paint fairly traditionally, working from light to dark, sometimes completing a section at a time. I spend much more time planning how and what to paint than actually putting brush to paper, but for me this is the most exciting part!
